Summary: Brian in his despair as he sits in the hospital corridor following Justin's bashing.

	Broken

A/N: Okay, I should be working on other projects. I don't know where this came from... but when these thoughts pop into my head, I just have to complete them. This painful moment is one that always brings me to tears no matter how many times I have seen it.

**Broken**

Brian sat in the cold hospital corridor, barely registering the comforting touch of his best friend's hand upon his head.

Except that it wasn't comforting... no, not at all.

Nothing could absolve him of the guilt and regret now eating a path into his soul.

He had known this night would happen, sooner or later.

His Sunshine had been so brave the night he had confronted Chris Hobbs on Liberty Avenue. Brian had recognized the look of hatred in the boy's eyes as Justin had his moment. As Justin revealed the embarrassing truth about Hobbs before his friends, Brian knew it was not over. He had tried to silence Justin... to no avail.

Justin had always been so strong, even in the face of adversity. He would always do what was right, no matter the consequences.

Now the consequences had set them on this tragic path. His beautiful Sunshine could now be fighting for his life because he had selfishly made an exibition of them at the prom. Showing all of Justin's world how much Brian meant to him... and to the eye of the beholder how much Justin meant to him as well.

He would carry the memory of that dance with him forever, whether it had been right or wrong, he would never forget how damned perfect they had moved together... how in sync they had always been.

He had two wishes right now. First and foremost was for Justin to recover from this horrific ordeal, unscathed and whole. Secondly, he wished he could relive the end of the evening. He would not have left him alone to return to the dance... he would have taken his Sunshine with him.

As Brian sat, unashamedly letting tears cascade down his face he knew how it felt to have his guts ripped apart. That was his reality now.

If only Justin could see him now. Justin had always suspected that Brian cared. Persistent little shit - always. He remembered Justin's words - Brian Kinney gives a shit. Truer words had never been spoken when it came to one Justin Taylor.

Now, all he wanted was to see those beautiful eyes open... the beaming Sunshine smile that made him feel good inside.

In this moment, more than ever Brian knew how it felt to be broken. The only thing that could mend him now was for Justin to open his eyes... and return to the land of the living. Return to him. Until then, Brian knew he would be nothing but a shell of what he once was. Going through the motions of his own survival... but never complete.

Brian knew he would probably never be able to say the words Justin so desperately wanted to hear... be the man he wanted him to be, but he knew one thing for certain. Without Justin... he was simply nothing.
